EMULSCEMENT ... FUNDEREN MET TOEKOMST: BESCHRIJVING VAN EEN PROEFPROJECT

With a view to recycle large amounts of tar-containing asphalt waste, a new bound roadbase material was developed called emuls cement. The material consists of waste asphalt granulate, bitumen emulsion, cement, and water, and it was developed as a variant of crushed asphalt cement. On the basis of a test project in the Netherlands the material properties of emuls cement are described. First, the preliminary investigations are discussed. These included various tests on emuls cement mixes and samples to determine properties such as compressive strength and flow. Next, the construction aspects when processing emuls cement are discussed. A test section was constructed according to the mix-in-place method. During construction a process control was carried out on aspects such as grading and compaction. Also falling weight deflection measurements were carried out on the emuls cement layer to get an impression of the dynamic modulus of elasticity. Leaching tests showed a 70% reduction compared to the leaching of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in crushed asphalt cement. After half a year no cracking had occurred. Based upon the findings the required minimum asphalt thickness can be reduced considerably when using emuls cement roadbases. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 867688.
