MATERIAAL-EFFECTIEVERE ASFALTCONSTRUCTIE

In this paper a new asphalt road structure is proposed that meets the current Dutch design standards and that can be compared to a steel bridge deck. The structure is as follows: a) a wearing course with sections or joists of asphalt material under it; b) filling space between the joists and under the wearing course to be filled with filling material; c) the joists and the filling material rest upon an asphalt layer, called support layer, or upon a layer of other material; d) the support layer rests upon the foundation and subsoil. It is stated that the material at the height of the neutral axis is not subjected to tensile forces or stresses; it is only subjected to compressive forces. So it is concluded that at this height other, possibly cheaper material than asphalt may be used. The feasibility of the structure is discussed on the basis of three aspects: 1) the construction aspect; 2) the mechanics of the structure; and 3) the cost aspect. Stress calculations with the CAPA-3D finite element program (three dimensional version of the Computer Aided Pavement Analysis program) show that, from a mechanical point of view, the structure is sound.
