TIME DOMAIN REFLECTOMETRY AS MOISTURE MEASURING METHOD IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

The Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division (DWW) of the Dutch Public Works Department (Rijkswaterstaat) put an automatic moisture measuring system into practice for research into road structures. The system is based on Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). It is able to monitor the volumetric moisture content and bulk electrical conductivity of road foundations and embankments using built-in sensors. The TDR method and the sensors that are used are described. In the laboratory good results were obtained measuring the space and time dependent bulk electrical conductivity in a column of refuse incineration slags during leaching tests. Also the vertical water vapour transport due to a temperature gradient in a column of coarse sand was measured. Both laboratory experiments are discussed. Finally, the preparations for an in situ experiment, in which the moisture measuring method is extended with large sensors for monitoring the moisture behaviour in a coarse crushed concrete roadbase of Dutch state road A2, are discussed.
