RENEWED PROFILE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM

This paper reports on a study into new profile measurement techniques for the ARAN (Automatic Road ANalyzer) measuring vehicle in order to obtain data for reshaping calculations. The aim of the new techniques is the reduction of the required rod and level surveys in order to avoid disturbance of the traffic flow and to improve the traffic safety during the measurements. First, the requirements and specifications of a renewed profile measurement system are presented. Then, the capabilities of the ARAN profile measurement system are described and analyzed. As the gyroscope of the ARAN system does not meet the requirements, a new gyro system is proposed. Four types of gyro are discussed: 1) the vertical gyro; 2) the gyro package; 3) AHRS (Attide and Heading Reference System); 4) INS (Inertial Navigation System) or IRS (Inertial Reference System). The use of updates when working with gyro systems is discussed. Updates are additional measurements necessary to improve the operation of the gyro. It is recommended to measure the road profile by means of a combination of the existing acoustic distance meters of the ARAN and a new gyro system (AHRS, INS).
