EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON STEEL BEAMS CURVED IN PLAN

The ultimate load behavior of I-beams curved in plan are considered in this paper. The results from experiments performed on two sets of I-beams, representing rolled sections and built-up sections, are presented. The test results for deformations and ultimate strength are in good agreement with corresponding values predicted by elastoplastic finite-element analysis. Also considered are the effects of residual stresses and radius of curvature to span-length ratio (R/L) on ultimate strength. A concentrated load was applied to the I-beams at intermediate points where the beams were laterally restrained. Experimental results reveal that the load-carrying capacity decreases with the decrease in the R/L ratio.
