SOUNDING THE ALARM FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY

A new warning device can help protect highway construction and maintenance workers in work zones from injury or even death. The device is called an intrusion alarm and it warns workers via an earsplitting siren that a vehicle has entered the work zone, giving workers extra seconds to get out of the way. This article describes the technology behind the perimeter-marking device. A list of manufacturers is provided. The device was developed under the Strategic Highway Research Program.
