SEPARATION IN PAVEMENTS: A VALUABLE GEOSYNTHETIC FUNCTION

A much overlooked fact about geotextile use in pavements is that they provide a separation function that prevents mixing of subgrade soil and base materials. This crucial separation can significantly extend pavement life. This article explains, though, that the geosynthetics industry has focused on other benefits, such as aggregate cost savings and their reinforcement function. A new National Cooperative Highway Research Program study will explore the life cycle cost benefits of incorporating geotextiles in pavement design.
