The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is organized in separate titles. This article interprets the first three titles, which prohibit employment discrimination, require access to public programs, and provide access to public places, respectively. The interpretation of these ADA titles is of particular importance to design professionals, who must ensure that their clients meet the act's stringent design and construction requirements. Consequently, design professionals assume full responsibility and liability for ADA compliance. Design firms are also subject to ADA Title I regarding nondiscriminatory employment practices. In a sidebar, the author suggests that companies implement systematic procedures to ensure compliance with Title I.
