MAKING THE TRAINS RUN ON TIME

The rail cars of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) serve 37 suburban communities on six routes at 143 stations. As ridership increases, the CTA must be prepared to maintain the 1,216 cars in its system. This article reports on the $60 million revamp of CTA's 67-year-old Skokie, Illinois, rail shop. The "anatomy" of the current Skokie rail shop is outlined as well as the upgrades and new equipment that will bring the Skokie yard into the modern era.
