CABLE-STAYED CANAL CROSSING

A new precast concrete Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Bridge, which will carry three lanes of traffic in each direction, is on schedule for an August 1995 completion. The Delaware Department of Transportation hopes to lure traffic from the overburdened U.S. 13 to the aptly named Relief Route (State Route 1) and its cable-stayed canal crossing. This article describes the four precast components of the bridge, including: prestressed concrete piles, box-pier segments, trapezoidal box girders, and main span delta frames. Assembly of the bridge is discussed at length.
