Due to their dualistic character, paved-in light rail track constructions suffer from many problems which are unknown to open construction dedicated to just rail traffic. A fundamental study on structural behavior and failure modes of paved-in track, involving the tramway systems of Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and the light rail system of Utrecht, was commissioned to Delft University of Technology. The study consisted of three parts: a comprehensive questionnaire, computer calculations of a selected number of constructions and an extensive measurement campaign on the four networks. The results showed large variations in behavior. The study has resulted in the proposition of a certain number of improved standard constructions.
