CITY-LOGISTICS - SOLUTIONS FOR URBAN COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT BY COOPERATIVE OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

Supplying different locations, especially in inner cities, is now only possible with smaller vehicles and often only at particular times. Moreover, freight traffic obstructs itself and the other road users by causing congestions through loading and unloading in the streets. This causes safety problems and impacts street traffic with noise and exhaust. Patent remedies are at hand: to shift freight traffic to the railways, establishing separate lorry routes in the cities, avoiding dead freight and make better use of the capability of lorries, using logistics and establishing Freight Traffic Centres. But the basic situations and the possible developments - neither in detail nor on a larger scale - are known or have been explored. Often the ideas of commercial transport or the design or shape of city logistics do vary considerably.
