CAR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS: HOW ARE EXPRESS HIGHWAY OPERATORS CONCERNED?

The fast growth of telecommunication and radio-broadcasting to mobiles is presently giving birth to numerous projects and experimentation. These technologies constitute the framework of large European (DRIVE), American (IVHS) or Japanese (VICS) programs. Some of them are already commercialized and others are only emerging. The services which could be supported by these new communication media are, for the time being, more prone to intellectual speculations than large distribution schemes. Concerning Europe, the following means of transmitting information to drivers are being used: The Paneuropean digital cellular radio-telephone, complying with the GSM standard, is now operating in France. RDS encoding of FM transmission is growing, as well as larger availability of car-radio receivers with RDS functions. Standardization of "dedicated short range communication" (DSRC) is also in progress (CEN TC 278-WG 9). This is based on microwave frequency transmission in the 5.8 Ghz band and is the medium selected for remote toll charging.
