This article outlines various reasons for enforcing traffic laws, not the least of which is curbing unsafe driving practices. Routine traffic stops also result in the apprehension of serious criminals and the retention of impaired drivers. To encourage law-enforcement agencies to attend to traffic violations, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awards Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grants to community police forces. STEP initiatives focus on safety-belt use, sobriety checkpoints, and highway traffic safety. Programs like Campaign Safe and Sober, Click It or Ticket, and Checkpoint Tennessee are some examples of successful efforts that are highlighted in the article. A reader survey on enforcement of traffic laws follows.
