SHORT AGGREGATE PIERS DEFEAT POOR SOILS

Originally designed to strengthen poor soils, geopiers or short aggregate piers are now used as an alternative to overexcavation. The piers fill a gap between deep pile foundations and shallow footings. This article defines geopiers as stiff springs within a less stiff soil matrix that enhances the soil through bottom densification and vertical and horizontal prestressing. Highlighted are the various unique applications of short aggregate piers. Settlement predictions and seismic considerations are addressed as well.
