A NEW ROAD VISIBILITY METER PROTOTYPE FOR THE DRIVE/CROW PROJECT

This short article describes an integrating nephelometer for measuring visibility on highways. The instrument consists of a photometer, a light trap, and a light source. It relies on the direct proportionality between measured luminance and the integral of the atmosphere's volume scattering function. Details of how the apparatus works, and the errors incurred during measurement are discussed briefly. Unlike other kinds of visibility meters it does allow a priori evaluation of the magnitude of any systematic errors. For the covering abstract see IRRD 867248.
