BRAKING IMPROVEMENTS

The article briefly gives details of a full hydraulic braking system for trucks, in the 6-12 tonne range, that has been developed by Lucas. The system is said to be lighter and cheaper than current air/hydraulic systems and also offers response times reduced by 20%. The system uses sliding caliper discs on all wheels with a spring chamber to operate the park brake. By using hydraulic power from the steering pump and also removing the need for an air compressor, savings are made on cost and weight. The system can also incorporate an automatic braking system (ABS) modulator without the need for an additional pump.
