TEAM EFFORT PUTS SCOTS ROADS AHEAD

In October 1993 SERCO Systems were awarded a #13.9m contract by Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Office to integrate CITRAC (Centrally Integrated TRAffic Control system of Strathclyde Regional Council) with FEDICS (Forth Estuary Driver Information and Control System), with the objective of creating a strategic system for Scotland's major urban centres and their inter-urban links. The new combined CITRAC/FEDICS system incorporates a wide range of ATT practices aimed at helping control and manage the strategic Scottish road network, and these are described in this article, and include use of variable message signs (VMS); automatic incident detection (AID) with network communication by PAKNET radio links; and CCTV. The integrated system is expected to be completed by April 1996 and provide links between five Scottish road authorities, Scottish Office network managers, Clyde Tunnel and Forth Bridge masters, as well as media and motoring organisations.
