MINOR EARTHWORKS: BACKFILL AGAINST AND COVERING BRIDGES AND CULVERTS

TERRASSEMENTS SECONDAIRES: REMBLAI CONTIGU AUX PONTS ET BUSES

In this paper the various factors to be observed when executing such earthworks in order to prevent failures or malfunctions are discussed. Variations in design specifications and material requirements applied in various countries are given based on responses to enquiries among member countries. The subjects covered are: influence on the structure from quality of backfill and covering; composition of fill material; method used and quality control; drainage; and connection between backfill and embankment. Present research activities are briefly discussed: research on earth pressure against bridge abutments in Sweden; tests on the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) as a backfill material in Japan and Norway; and research on the use of flexible steel culverts in Norway and Sweden.
