Real time information on buses for passengers is being provided by satellites linked to new technology, for the first time in the UK in Birmingham from September 1994. The CENTRO led project is part of the European Union supported QUARTET project (Quadrilateral Advanced Research on Telematics for Environment and Transport), and is part of the DRIVE II initiative. Four cities, Birmingham, Stuttgart, Turin and Athens are collaborating on a series of pilot applications addressing urban pollution and congestion issues. Phase one of the collaboration is due to be completed by the end of 1994. Final trials are being carried out on the second component of QUARTET, the Optimum Route Software (ORS). The project is briefly described in this article.
