This article is a brief review of progress in the adoption of a national streetworks register. At the earliest stages, Northern Ireland was left out as having its own unique set of circumstances. Authorities in mainland Scotland plan to advance developments which will enable the existing Susiephone system to comply with the 1991 Streetworks Act. However, the Scottish Islands - Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles - are waiting for the government to make special allowance for them, as they have small populations, no trunk roads and few road openings. To participate in an overall scheme would have the Island councils paying proportionately more than other users. Progress in implementation of the register in England and Wales is also briefly mentioned.
