INTERURBAN CONTROL AND ROAD UTILISATION SIMULATION

Last in a series of 3, this paper considers the use of traffic simulation to analyse the impact of RTI techniques on two-way road traffic. Headway control, speed control and overtaking assistance systems are evaluated for two-way roads in Sweden, Norway, Germany and Greece. The assumption is made that all vehicles are equipped. The particular properties of two-way traffic are discussed. In considering headway control and speed control, the effects on the following are examined: a) average journey speed, b) overtaking rate, c) percentage of journey time spent in platoons and d) fuel consumption. In considering overtaking assistance, risk and conflict situations are defined and the effect on average journey speed and overtaking rate examined. For the covering abstract see IRRD 866746.
