This State of the Art Review, commissioned by the Transport Research Laboratory, aims to outline the present position and latest developments in the repair of deterioration and damage in concrete bridges. Brief case histories illustrate the variety of problems met and solutions found in the rehabilitation of concrete bridges. The main sections of the book deal with: (1) durability and maintenance, including the identification of defects such as cracking and spalling of concrete; (2) detection and monitoring, including visual inspection, concrete testing, reinforcement corrosion, post-tensioning tendons; (3) repair techniques, including treatment of cracking, concrete removal, patch repairs, sprayed concrete, replacement concrete, external reinforcement, supplementary prestress; (4) protection, including corrosion countermeasures, concrete surface treatment, coating of reinforcement, cathodic protection, desalination sand realkalization; and (5) performance of bridges, repairs, surface treatments, cathodic protection.
