UP AND AWAY TO A WORLD RECORD

The Normandy Bridge, which crosses the River Seine in Normandy, France, is a record-setting 856-m cable stayed bridge. The span was completed in August 1994 and is 60 percent longer than the next longest cable-stayed bridge. This article describes the 18-month collaborative development effort that resulted in a successful construction sequence, which is also described. Contract negotiations are detailed as are specific aspects of bridge construction, including foundation work and installation of aerodynamic steel box bridge segments.
