An offshoot of geographic information system (GIS) technology is digital orthophotos. A digital orthophoto is a raster image of ground features in their true map position created by using computer image processing to remove image displacements. This article is a comprehensive guide to understanding and using digital orthophotos. Digital orthophotos are compared to semirectified enlargements and GIS line maps. The five-step process to create digital orthophotos is described and two GIS applications for digital orthophotos--appraisal mapping and infrastructure management--are discussed. Digital orthophotos can be a viable alternative for creating accurate base maps. Potential users must weigh the benefits, applications, and limitations of digital orthophotos with photogrammetric vector maps.
