TOKYO STACKS TRAIN PLATFORM

In Tokyo, Japan, engineers are stacking a train platform and its tracks above an existing platform and tracks. This article explains how contractors are building an elevated platform over busy Tokyo Station to accommodate a new bullet train line. East Japan Railway Company is planning the unique feat, which involves underpinning parts of the 79-year-old station building, threading new columns through brick arches, and hand-digging deep foundations. Details on the design of the new facility are provided.
