WEATHERING STEEL BRIDGES / A 1994 REVIEW OF PERFORMANCE

Between December 1993 and April 1994, the author, under contract to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), re-inspected 52 bridges in nine states that were originally inspected in 1980 as a part of an AISI coordinated review of weathering steel highway bridges. The results of the 1980 inspections are included in the 1982 AISI report "Performance of Weathering Steel Highway Bridges -- A First Phase Report." Forty-seven of the bridges carry highway traffic. The others are a railroad bridge, a pedestrian bridge, a combination pedestrian and horse bridge, and two that are a part of the West Virginia University Personal Rapid Transit system. Bridges numbered 13 through 22 are in Michigan. Bridges 14 and 21 have already been painted. Because of the conditions present today, the state plans to paint bridges 15 and 16, and possibly others, as soon as funding allows.
