ALCOHOL AND DRUGS INVOLVED IN FATAL ACCIDENTS IN THE NORTH WEST OF SPAIN

This paper presents some results from the analysis of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) among 173 drivers and pedestrians admitted to hospitals in North West Spain during a period of eight years. Forty incidents of drunken driving where drivers were stopped by traffic police were also included in the results. The results were analysed statistically, using an SPSS program on a personal computer. Out of 113 accident cases studied, only 26 had BAC levels not exceeding 0.01gm/l, but 25 had high BACs, over 2.5gm/l. Of the nine drivers convicted of drinking and driving, two had BACs over 2.5gm/l. Of the nine pedestrians knocked down, three had BACs over 2.5gm/l. Of the 40 incidents where drivers were stopped by traffic police, six had BACs over 2.5gm/l.
