AUSTROADS ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY: PREPARING AUSTROADS TO BE ENVIRONMENTALLY EFFECTIVE IN THE 21ST CENTURY
An AUSTROADS Environmental Strategy (incorporating Environmental Principles) has been developed to guide AUSTROADS and its member authorities in a direction which will ensure effective environmental management of the roadsystem and its further development. The AUSTROADS Environmental Goal is "to promote a road transport system which addresses community access needsand reflects an appropriate balance amongst environmental, economic and social equity issues within the broader framework of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD)/Sustainable Development (SM)". This paper provides an outline of the strategy which has been developed to attain this goal, its development and the national and international context in which it is set.
