THE MELBOURNE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION (TMA) DEMONSTRATION PROJECT -AN INTERIM ASSESSMENT

Travel management associations (TMAs) are among various work-based traveldemand management (TDM) measures being extensively applied in suburban areas of large American cities, notably Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington DC. They are seeking to convert car driving commuters to carpool, public transport, cycle or walk modes, so as to reduce traffic congestion and to achieve environmental and energy conservation objectives. The relevance of TMAs in addressing traffic problems in Melbourne was assessed by asuburban locations in 1993. The paper outlines the structure and role ofTMAs generally, and then describes the way in which the two demonstrationTMAs performed in the Melbourne environment. The relevance of TMAs in other urban situations is also discussed, together with guidelines for site selection and initial steps in TMA formation.
