DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF A HIGH SPEED ROAD DATA COLLECTION VEHICLE FOR ENHANCED ASSET MANAGEMENT

This paper describes the evolution, development and application of a new vehicle based system developed by ARRB. The new system is aimed at providing high quality conventional types of data, and at facilitating the presentation of newer and more enhanced information to assist in extending the benefits of asset management. The background relating to previous high speed profilometer development at ARRB is covered, and a framework linking changing needs with ARRB's philosophy and structure in the development of the system are presented. The philosophy is shown to underpin the realisation of a flexible road condition measurement platform which provides a bridge between existing manual methods of transverse deformation measurement,whilst also facilitating appraisal of the optimal configurations for automated measurement for particular situations. Realisation of the new system was facilitated by development of a purpose built laser sensor which wasdesigned and built at ARRB. The application of 13 of these sensors and associated systems for high speed measurement of pavement roughness, transverse deformation (rutting) and surface texture deficiency (flushing) are described, together with the integration of other technologies such as a satellite (GPS) mapping system.
