There is a growing recognition that a lower volume arterial road through a town centre or a suburban 'strip' shopping centre has more than just a traffic function to perform. Efforts are being made to change traffic management in such locations to slow traffic and better manage the inherent conflict between traffic and pedestrian. Examples are provided of completedprojects in rural Victoria and projects under way in rural centres and insome Melbourne suburban centres. Recognition is given to the extensive research work in New South Wales in 'Environmental Adaptation of the Main Street', and the use to which similar principles have been or are being used in Victoria. The impetus for change has come from local government or local traders and residents. The road authorities are reacting positively in many cases, and even encouraging change in this area. (a)
