DEALING WITH IVHS ISSUES IN URBAN AREAS

This paper restates the goals of an IVHS program, reviews the congestion trends in urban areas, and roles of various levels of public/private partnerships, and MPO. Critical requirements of IVHS of infrastructure are reviewed. The issues faced by these professionals includes, local organizational change requirement, future National Architecture, and the development of urban IVHS traffic controller. The funding sources for Traffic Management Center operations support are identified, and necessary short term federal initiatives for maintenance issues are also stated. The overall intent of the paper is to bring critical elements together to prepare a case for sustained level of cooperation and change required in urban areas to help the public/private sector succeed in the cause of IVHS.
