GOALS AND DEFINITIONS OF AUTOMATED HIGHWAY SYSTEM CONCEPTS

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has initiated an Automated Highway System (AHS) program as part of the Department's Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) initiative. Within IVHS, the AHS is an Advanced Vehicle Control System user service that uses modern electronics to provide fully automated vehicle control. This paper includes the following: A summary and description of the assumed AHS deployment and operations goals; Summary of the postulated system components and sub-components that would comprise an AHS designed to meet those goals; Identification of the characteristics that can be used to distinguish one AHS concept from another; and A description of how these factors were used to identify AHS concepts.
