CHICAGO AUTOMATES EXPRESSWAY LANES

Operation Kennedy is a 5-year project of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to rebuild the John F. Kennedy Expressway in Chicago. The completed project will include reversible lanes controlled by an automated system of signage and barricades. The three-phase construction project has come at a cost of $450 million. This article describes each phase of the project and explains the automation system. Most of the construction is complete; postconstruction work, such as landscaping and other finishing touches, will be completed in 1995.
