TECHNOLOGIES FOR PLANNING RAILROAD TRACK MAINTENANCE AND RENEWAL

Railroad track maintenance and renewal are important for safe and efficient railroad operations. Although research and development activities regarding track maintenance and renewal are not widely reported in the literature, larger railroads do use condition-data collection and computer-based decision-support systems to maintain their tracks. This article presents an overview of the available technologies. Track inspection methods range from visual inspection to sensors and sophisticated measuring systems for the identification of corrugation, measurement of track geometry, measurement of rail wear, and location of internal rail flaws. Data from these systems are compiled in a track quality index and then later accessed for safety evaluations, work planning, and strategic planning of repair and replacement. A variety of systems and issues are discussed.
