A ROAD ON WHICH TO HANG THE SKELETON OR REVIVAL

The Black Country Spine Road, when completed, will provide a much needed additional link between the M6 and the M5. Awarded to Costain Building and Civil Engineering Ltd earlier this year by the Black Country Development Corporation (BCDC), the Spine Road North #5.2M contract, comprising just over one kilometre of dual carriageway and also incorporating a complex traffic signalled gyratory system at the southern end of the junction of the A41 and the A4038, is currently under construction. The new road is being paid for partly with a #2.5 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund, and is scheduled for completion in April 1995. In its lump sum bid, Costain, the major contractor, accepted all the risks associated with the extensive mineworkings, and contaminated land on the construction site. Site investigation techniques included rotary drilling with continuous coreline, ground radar and hand dug pits. Large quantities of imported fill were required including a 40,000 metre cubed class 6C rock blanket and 50,000 metres cubed of class 2 embankment materials. The project also involves substantial modification and upgrading of two 18th century brick arch canal bridges at Moxley and the construction of a large precast concrete culvert.
