FACILITIES FOR PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT IN METROPOLITAN CENTRES

The increase in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic has increased dramatically in India so creating major bottlenecks especially at intersections. As pedestrians are exposed to great danger at such locations, providing safe passage for pedestrians has become a necessity. Grade-separated elements such as footbridges and subways provide a safe environment for pedestrians without causing additional congestion. It is considered that footbridges are not popular whereas subways have a higher utilisation. The paper presents in detail the various aspects of planning a pedestrian subway facility and its implementation.
