VEHICLE DETECTION FOR ADVANCED TRANSPORT TELEMATICS
This paper describes issues concerning the application of vehicle detection devices in Advanced Transport Telematics and reviews current technologies in use or planned in the near future. Three types of detection system are differentiated: a) vehicle detection, b) zone traffic detection and c) environmental detection. Systems briefly described include a) inductive loop, b) microwave (radar), c) piezo cable, d) capacitive strip, e) laser, f) passive infra-red, g) video image processing, h) magnetometer and i) ultrasound. Tables are provided of parameters required for the three types of detector systems identified and the enabling technology listed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 865401.
