ADAPTIVE LANE FINDING IN ROAD TRAFFIC IMAGE ANALYSIS

The importance of automatic road lane location to road monitoring systems is discussed and a system based on the formation of an activity map described. Steps in the formation of the activity map are outlined. Consecutive image frames from a video sequence are analysed. Further processing with a lane finding algorithm builds up a pattern corresponding to the traffic lanes surveyed in a matter of minutes. The ability of the system to adapt to changes is illustrated. When the camera is rotated to alter the scene, the new lane positions are located and fully differentiated after 5 minutes. Applications for the system are suggested.
