DIANA NON-LINEAR ANALYSIS OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURES WITH AN EPS SUB-BASE UNDER STATIC LOADING

The research described in this report was carried out as part of the research project "EPS as a light weight sub-base material in pavement structures". This report describes the background of the modelling and the calculations as well as the results of calculations on flexible pavement structures with an expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) subbase using the finite element program DIANA (DIsplacement method ANAlyzer). First, the development of the pavement structure model is explained in steps. The design of the finite element mesh is described and the chosen form and dimensions are argued. Information regarding the implemented element types is given, such as topology and nodes. Specifications of linear and non-linear elastic calculation procedures are given. The necessary input data for these calculations are listed and the applied loading is described. Then the DIANA analysis is discussed, which was carried out on three groups of flexible pavements: 1) pavement models without implemented interface elements; 2) pavement structures with implemented interface elements in the EPS layer, which model the joints between the EPS blocks; and 3) pavement models of six existing test sections at the Bundesanstalt fuer Strassenwesen (BASt) in Germany. The pavement structure characteristics, analysis procedure, and calculation results are discussed for each pavement group.
