TAR CRUSHED ASPHALT CEMENT ROADBASE

TEER-BREEK-ASFALT-CEMENT FUNDERING

This article looks into the technical and environmentally protective boundary conditions with regard to the reuse of tar containing pavement materials in roadbase layers, such as tar crushed asphalt cement, tar limestone stabilization, and tar limestone cement stabilization. Furthermore, the points of interest of some Dutch research programs on this matter are considered, such as concentration of the tar containing materials, determination of health and environmental risks, and standardization. As a practical application a two layer roadbase construction, consisting of a tar crushed asphalt cement layer surrounded by a layer of lean concrete with waste granulate, is discussed. To prevent erosion of the lean concrete and leaching of the tar crushed asphalt cement, the roadbase is provided with an adhesion layer and covered with a gravel asphaltic concrete layer of 0.06 m. This roadbase construction was carried out on part of the Dutch state road 73N. The following aspects are discussed: a) the structure; b) the construction activities; c) laboratory research; d) compaction tests; e) quality control and requirements; f) costs.
