GEOGRID FOR ASPHALT REINFORCEMENT, TRONDHEIM, NORWAY
This short article describes a project which used a geogrid reinforced asphalt in a structural overlay to a heavily-trafficked industrial estate road. The road length involved was 550m and the width was 6.5m. Brief details of the condition of the pavement before overlaying are provided, as are details of the functions that the overlay was required to perform. The geogrid reinforcement used was a standard mix incorporating a layer of polymer geogrid Tensar ARI (an oriented polypropylene). Brief details of the installation method are provided. The installation costs are also given. The results indicate that a substantial saving was achieved. After four years of heavy traffic the road is still in excellent condition. The short section of unreinforced overlay is already showing signs of rutting. For the covering abstract see IRRD 865821.
