GEOMEMBRANE WATERPROOFING OF DRY TUNNEL UNDER TWO RIVERS. LYON METRO TUNNEL, FRANCE

This short article describes the first use in France of a PVC geomembrane for waterproofing a completely submerged tunnel. The tunnel was driven under the Saone and Rhone rivers, through sandy- gravelly alluvium having high permeability. The mechanical properties of PVC which make it ideal for such a project are presented, as are details of the geomembrane installation method. A cross section of the tunnel vault is provided, showing the location of the geomembrane. Brief details of the performance of the geomembrane are also provided. This includes details of leakage, and of the results from the heat- weld tests undertaken. For the covering abstract see IRRD 865821.
