NUMERICAL MODELLING OF A REINFORCED EMBANKMENT AT THE WILLOW PLANTATION (A414)

This report presents the results of finite element analyses on the performance of a 7m high embankment constructed over weak and compressible alluvial deposits on the A414 between Stanstead Abbotts and Harlow. The embankment was reinforced by a single layer of geogrid at its base and vertical drains were installed to accelerate the rate of consolidation of the subsoils. Details of the modelling technique are provided, along with both predictions and back-analyses of the performance of the embankment. A number of analyses were completed to bound the likely performance of the structure, and to identify the importance of the parameters controlling performance. The assumptions inherent in the analyses and the problems encountered with the representation of the structure are discussed. Overall, the numerical analyses captured the essential behaviour of the embankment, although the calculated lateral strains in the subsoil were much higher than observed on site.
