ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF ROAD REPAIR

Highway authorities face a considerable volume of local road rehabilitation associated with traffic damage to the edges (haunches) of roads. The County Surveyors Society commissioned the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) to carry out research into the use of non- standard materials, such as recycling road materials, secondary aggregates, marginal materials, industrial by-products, for cost effective repairs. The purpose of the research is to provide highway engineers with a practical method to assess these materials. Trial sites were constructed, in total 22 test sections and 6 control sections. The main trial sites are in Gloucestershire, Leicestershire and Cheshire. The trials are designed to evaluate the compaction properties of each of the materials. The performance assessment, is presented in this article.
