PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH ALTERNATIVE VEHICLES AND MEANS FOR DEALING WITH THEM

This short article surveys the various alternative fuels and engine designs giving the advantages and disadvantages of each. It also attempts to forecast future trends, which will almost certainly be driven by legislation rather than by economic forces. Special attention is given to: (a) electric power; (b) gas turbines; (c) the Stirling engine; (d) alternative methods of energy storage such as the Oerliken flywheel buses; and (e) alternative fuels such as rape seed oil or ethanol. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864909.
