DEVELOPING NON-TRADITIONAL DESIGN ENGINES

Work being carried out in the USSR on alternatives to current engine designs is described covering: a) axial internal combustion engines and b) traverse engines with variable compression ratios. The axial internal combustion engine is seen as the only method for reducing fuel consumption further and an improvement in efficiency of 30-40% is claimed. Aspects of mass, design, production procedures and emissions are discussed. The traverse engine is being developed as an alternative to the car diesel engine. Details of fuel efficiency, mass, production procedures and emissions are discussed. Other factors that could further improve efficiency and reduce emissions are noted.
