CONCEPTION OF BUILDING ECOLOGICALLY CLEAN AUTOMOBILE TRANSPORTATION COMPLEX

The author outlines the negative effects of a dependence on motorised transport and the need for an 'automobile transportation complex' which will limit these effects. The National Scientific-Technical Programme' (NSTP) developed by the USSR is then briefly described. The first part is concerned with developing a strategy and the legislation to carry it through. The second part consists of a number of projects involving the development of environmentally-friendly vehicles. Elements of the 'Progress' clean city bus project and electric car project are outlined. The third part of the NSTP is concerned with traffic management and the fourth with alternative fuels, in particular hydrogen. The fifth part consists of a range of related projects covering such topics as vibration suppression, wear resistant tyres and microprocessor control. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864909.
