THE AUTOMOBILE'S EVOLUTION IN THE CONTEXT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The destruction wrought on a global scale by transport and road building is described and an alternative approach considered. The author suggests that although technologies exist for a more frugal use of natural resources, they are not developed because the price of oil is too low. He then proposes a gradual revenue-neutral ecological tax reform involving a 7% annual price increase on fuel and other natural resources over a period of 30 years. The effects on the transport sector after 10, 20 and 30 years are estimated. The advantages of the system and anticipated effects on society are outlined. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864909.
